Occupational Safety and Health Risk Assessment
The fundamental cornerstone of any workplace safety and health management system is an occupational safety and health (OSH) risk assessment. An OSH risk assessment is a systematic examination of all aspects of work undertaken to determine and evaluate the degree of risk involved in terms of severity, frequency and cost of the potential claim in the case of injury or harm. Hazards are identified, risk associated with the hazard analysed/evaluated and appropriate ways of eliminating or controlling the hazard determined. It is a planning tool to help you minimise the risk of accidents, of ill health, threats to personal security, damage to property or the environment. The earlier, more thoroughly you do it and the better you communicate its findings, the more effective it is likely to be.
Section 6. (3) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act, 2007 require that every occupier carries out appropriate risk assessments in relation to the safety and health of persons employed and, on the basis of these results, adopt preventive and protective measures to ensure that under all conditions of their intended use, all chemicals, machinery, equipment, tools and process under the control of the occupier are safe and without risk to health and comply with the requirements of safety and health provisions in this Act. A copy of this report should be sent to the area occupational safety and health officer.
There are many types of OSH risk assessments from general workplace assessments to specialist areas such as ergonomic, electrical, machinery, fire, confined space and work at height among others.
